William Ellis Photography - Portfolio Posters

William Ellis

"Beautiful images" Herman Leonard

"This is not reportage - this is art"
Peter Vacher, The Guardian, Jazzwise, Jazz UK

William Ellis is at the vanguard of music photographers and is widely recognised as having created an important document of the contemporary jazz scene in Africa, Europe and The Americas.

His contribution to the culture was recognised by the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City when he was invited to produce the Inaugural International Exhibition in 2005, and where he returned in 2008 to present his work in the 'Jazz in Black and White: Bebop and Beyond' exhibit.

William's work has been exhibited at international festivals and galleries in the U.K. and throughout the world including The Royal Academy of Arts, Amsterdam, Bremen, Cape Town, Havana, Hong Kong, The Hague, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City, Orlando, Toronto and Utrecht - and of course in Manchester at the Richard Goodall Gallery in the Northern Quarter

He serves on the committee of the Milt Hinton Award for Excellence in Jazz Photography and his images have been used in the JAM (Jazz Appreciation Month) Outreach program in the United States initiated by the Smithsonian Institution.

The work continues, shooting front of house and backstage at the world's legendary clubs and festivals.

William's insightful portraits, telling performance  and exquisite still life images play their part in creating the visual heritage of today's music scene.

His images have been used in art's media, by record companies and cultural events worldwide including The Nelson Mandela Foundation, Cuban national TV, KCETV Los Angeles, International Musician, Premier Guitar, Jazz FM, Jazz Times, Jazzwise, Coda, BBC Classical and LOOK 2011 Festival of Photography.

The cover of Tony Bennett's new release All Time Greatest Hits on Sony Music features his work.

"I love photographing at the Band on the Wall. It's great musical heritage is in the air - like another legendary club that has never changed location - The Village Vanguard in New York City." William Ellis, 2011
