BIOGRAPHY
RORY DUFFY is a freelance musician (saxophone, clarinet, flute, piano, vocals) and graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music and the University of Manchester. Rory played lead alto saxophone with both the Manchester University Jazz Orchestra and Manchester University Big Band for 3 years, and later played tenor saxophone with the Royal Northern College of Music Big Band, as well as freelancing with other projects along the way, including the 'Marmalade Saxophone Quartet' and 'Kaleidoscope' Jazz Project. After achieving a First Class honours degree at Manchester University, Rory attained a jazz scholarship to study postgraduate saxophone performance at the RNCM in Manchester, studying with Rob Buckland, Andy Scott, Mike Hall and Julian Arguelles. His final performance brought together eighteen different musicians including two pianists, several percussionists, a string quartet and a brass band, and earned him a Distinction.
Rory has played at many of the UK's major venues and festivals including Manchester Jazz Festival, Cultural Collage World Music Festival, Band on the Wall, Matt & Phred's Jazz Club and the RNCM, and combines his freelance career with his role as Development Assistant at BAND ON THE WALL.

Rory Duffy Trio
The trio, which began in May 2010, features Rory on vocals, saxophone and flute, accompanied by guitar and cajon, lending itself to an eclectic yet accessible sound perfect for restaurants, bars and small, intimate parties.
The trio combines Rory's love of Bossa Nova and Brazilian music with forays into acoustic Latin, popular and world music styles such as funk, soul and acid jazz; combining arrangements of classic popular tunes with original compositions in a dynamic small group setting.

Rory Duffy Jazz Quartet
Rory first encountered Latin jazz through listening to the recordings of Cuban saxophonist / clarinettist Paquito D'Rivera, who has remained one of his strongest influences, alongside other Latin jazz saxophonists such as David Sanchez, Ed Calle, Gato Barbieri, James Moody, Mario Rivera and Stan Getz. This led him to make musical pilgrimages to Cuba and Brazil to undertake ethnomusicological research on the musical styles.
His well-established jazz quartet, which began in November 2008, brings together all of these influences, with a heavy emphasis of improvisation, and drawing upon a wide range of material from major Afro-Cuban jazz artists such as Arturo Sandoval, Cal Tjader, Chick Corea, Chucho Valdes & Irakere, Dizzy Gillespie, Michel Camilo, Mongo Santamaria, Paquito D'Rivera, and also from Brazilian music citing composers such as Ivan Lins, Milton Nascimento and Toninho Horta.
Rory's jazz quartet works equally well within the jazz, blues and the American Songbook traditions, and is familiar with the repertoire of Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern and Rogers & Hart.
