“the polar punk who makes Björk sound tame” – Homa Khaleeli, The Guardian

Tanya Tagaq is an award-winning Canadian singer, songwriter and visual artist. She is possibly the only solo female artist to successfully take the indigenous female tradition of Inuit throat singing, and reinvent it using innovative contemporary vocal techniques.

She has collaborated with a number of acclaimed musicians including Björk, the Kronus Quartet and Mike Patton, and has earned widespread critical acclaim for her album Animism, including winner of the Polaris Music Prize 2014 (Canada’s Mercury Prize equivalent), Aboriginal Album of the Year (Juno Awards, 2015) and “Pushing the Boundaries Award 2014” (Canadian Folk Music Awards).

Tanya is a truly unique artist who has become successful on her own terms, without compromise. She is a powerful advocate for her native culture, creativity and modern femininity.

Watch Tanya singing on YouTube, listen on SoundCloud and follow her on Facebook and Twitter.

“Tagaq projects sounds that carry the imprint of the body’s secret contours and recesses, delving far beyond personal utterance, out beyond human identity, to summon voices from the flesh cavity haunts of animal spirits and primal energies” – The Wire
