Information

A Just Music Cafe event presenting two critically-acclaimed and enigmatic bands that weave a love of electronic exploration with brilliant artistry to stunning effect.

Laki Mera

“Not since the Blue Nile's first recording has such well crafted music appeared from a Scottish band, Laura Donnelly's voice as affecting as Paul Buchanan'. The time may be just right for Laki Mera to make the leap to more widespread acclaim.” – The Herald

“Something wonderful” – The Skinny

Glaswegian quartet Laki Mera blend fragile folk beauty and tender and ethereal vocals with almost sinister electronics that have earned them breathless comparisons with artists as diverse as the Cocteau Twins, Portishead, Blue Nile, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Radiohead. This concert comes on the back of their widely-acclaimed debut album The Proximity Effect.

Marconi Union

Since debuting in 2003 with Under Wires and Searchlights, Manchester’s Marconi Union have forged their own path with a succession of strong albums and carefully selected live performances and a steadily growing audience worldwide. All of this despite barely uttering a word to the press. Their reputation has swollen to the point where their album A Lost Connection hit the upper echelons of The Sunday Times’ Top 100 Albums of 2010, and where praise flowed from Uncut (“an act whose music slinks stealthily around the listener”), The Guardian (“gor-geous”) and US radio show Echoes (“poetic and almost classical”). Their latest album, Beautifully Falling Apart: Ambient Transmissions Vol. 1, is released on July 11th.

This event will begin at 7.30pm but our Picturehouse Cafe Bar will be open from 5.30pm for delicious food and drinks.
